Gathering Around the Table: A Thanksgiving Celebration
As the days get shorter and the weather cooler, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It’s the season to gather, reflect, and share our gratitude with the ones we love. In our family, Thanksgiving is marked by family traditions, favorite recipes, and a little bit of planning for the Christmas season. Here’s a look at what makes this time of year so special in our home!
Family Favorites: Weenie’s Cornbread Dressing Recipe
One recipe that has been passed down in our family is my grandmother’s famous cornbread dressing. Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without this beloved dish, full of comforting flavors that make you feel right at home.
Weenie’s Cornbread Dressing:
Ingredients:
4 cups dry bread crumbs
4 cups crumbled cornbread
Salt, pepper & sage to taste (I use 1 tsp of each)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup margarine
3 cups hot chicken or turkey broth
1 can cream of chicken soup
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine bread crumbs, cornbread, salt, pepper, and sage.
Sauté the onion and celery in margarine until softened.
Add the broth to the sautéed mixture, then pour everything over the bread mixture in the bowl.
Stir well, then add the cream of chicken soup. If needed, add more broth to achieve a soupy consistency.
Spoon the mixture into a greased 3-quart or 9x12 pan and bake at 350°F for 1 hour.
This recipe serves about 12 people and makes for delicious leftovers!
Thanksgiving Gratitude Tradition: Sharing Thanks Around the Table
One of our family’s most cherished Thanksgiving traditions is taking a few moments to go around the table and share what we’re each thankful for. As we settle in for the meal, this small ritual adds warmth, laughter, and sometimes even a few happy tears to our gathering. It’s a simple practice, but it holds so much meaning, as each person takes a moment to reflect on what they’re grateful for and express it aloud.
A Thanksgiving Story: Chef Ernie's Mission to Help Ukrainian Refugee Families
This Thanksgiving, I had the privilege of speaking with Chef Ernie, a remarkable chef who is giving back in a unique and meaningful way. After returning from Poland in 2022, where he cooked for Ukrainian refugees with World Central Kitchen, Ernie and his wife Amy began bringing Thanksgiving meals to newly arrived Ukrainian refugee families in Charlotte. This year, Chef Ernie is inviting others to join his initiative. He’s looking for more people to “pay it forward” by cooking and delivering a full Thanksgiving meal to a refugee family in the area. If you’re interested in bringing a bit of warmth and gratitude to someone’s Thanksgiving, this is a beautiful opportunity to make a difference in a family’s life. You can learn more about how to participate by visiting his website: Bring Them a Thanksgiving Meal.
Holiday Movie Season
One of the best parts of Thanksgiving weekend is holiday movies. If you're like me, you love Hallmark and Great American Family films. So here is your movie checklist for this year! Make some hot cocoa, grab your blankets, and get ready for a season full of cozy movie nights!
And Speaking of Christmas… My Christmas Book!
As we look forward to the Christmas season, don't forget about my Christmas children’s book, A Beautiful Story: Jesus and St. Nick. This children's book captures the heart of Christmas, celebrating both the birth of Jesus and the spirit of giving embodied by St. Nick. It’s a perfect story to read as a family or gift to a friend for Christmas!
As you gather around the table this Thanksgiving, I hope your heart is as full as your plate. Let’s take a moment to cherish the joy of family, friends, and the little things that make this season so special. Wishing you a holiday filled with gratitude, laughter, and all the pumpkin pie your heart desires!
Stay tuned for my upcoming Christmas blog—it's the most wonderful time of the year, and I can't wait to share festive ideas and inspiration with you!
Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁
